Australian democracy isn’t collapsing but it is fraying at the edges.

Written by Eleanor Howe, Senior Manager

We’re seeing the warning signs: declining trust, lack of transparency, fewer people getting involved in their communities, political disengagement, and unequal representation.

Lately, I’ve been asking myself: What can I do to help strengthen democracy?
For me, the answer lies in early and meaningful community engagement.
When done well, community engagement helps rebuild the foundations of a healthy democracy. It can:
> Build public trust, making people more likely to support decisions from transparent, accountable institutions
> Support inclusive decision-making, by actively hearing from diverse voices, especially those often underrepresented, and genuinely reflecting them in outcomes
> Strengthen social cohesion, supporting people to feel involved in their communities and giving people a sense of belonging and shared responsibility
> Foster adaptability and innovation, by embracing a wider range of ideas to respond to complex challenges like adapting to climate change and housing supply

When we engage early, openly, and respectfully, everyone benefits, and so does our democracy.

If you’re working to bring people into the conversation earlier and more meaningfully – keep going. This work matters.
